Van Horn Farm’s history dates back to the late 1800s to early 1900s when George Desmarais, a French Canadian, migrated from Crookston, MN to Moxee, WA in pursuit of a farming career. George’s move was instigated by a desire to pursue farming in an area with relatively mild winters and plentiful water for new irrigation projects. In 1904, George planted and harvested his hops, a crop the family has continued to harvest uninterrupted ever since. Through inheritance and marriage, hop farming remained a family legacy when George’s daughter, Denise, and her husband, Rich Van Horn, established ownership of Van Horn Farms in Moxee in 1972. Together, Rich and Denise have invested more than 40 years in the hop industry, continuing to farm many of the family’s original hop fields. Along with Denise’s brother, Marc, they also operate Desmarais Ranch, Inc., the family’s original hop ranch.
Not only are Rich and Denise proud to supply premium hops to brewers, they are also proud of their employees that work so hard to do so. They firmly believe that their entire team cares as much as they do about providing the highest quality hops and as such, strive to provide a positive work environment that promotes sustainable farming practices and safety for all. Rich’s dedication to the craft has lead him to receive the International Order of the Hop in 2001 and the Hop Quality Group’s Cascade Cup in 2012, earning industry wide recognition as a premier grower of Cascade hops. Van Horn Farms is pleased to be a part of Yakima Chief Hops ownership team.
