THIS IS THE PLACE: YAKIMA VALLEY
Yakima’s farms make it a truly amazing place to brew beer. Here at Single Hill Brewing, we’re out to turn the flavors of the valley – hops and fruit – into outstanding beers that will please drinkers new to craft beer and create a destination for the top brewers who descend on Yakima every hop harvest.
ON EXPERIMENTATION AND THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED
I’ve been laying the groundwork for a brewery since I brewed my first batch of beer in 2004 when I was just 18. I built ever larger brewing systems and gave away hundreds of gallons of beer to students while studying plant physiology at Reed College in Portland.
While debating a life in academia or the applied science of brewing, I moved to Colorado with a truckload of beer and landed as the Quality Manager at Odell Brewing Company. Following an interest in farming, I took a sabbatical from Odell in 2012. The break led me to Yakima to learn about hops, which turned into much more when I took on managing Quality and Sustainability for Hopunion, now YCH HOPS.
After four years working to improve hop quality from the farm to the brewery, building relationships with farms, and learning deeply about the potential of hops, I decided it was finally time to apply these years of experience by creating a brewery that weaves together technical brewing, agriculture, responsible business practices and community development.
CHECK OUT THE VIEW (AND THE CROPS) FROM YAKIMA
Yakima is dotted with cold storage structure and apple bins, all set against a backdrop of sagebrush hills. The green fields below contrast with the the towering volcanic peaks of Mt Adams and Rainier.
My family has always gardened extensively. In Yakima, my wife and I eliminated our front lawn in favor of crops including onions, barley, garlic, blueberries, tomatoes. While working with YCH Hops, I spent quite a bit of my effort working with farms to understand their work and tie that back to stories and technical information for brewers and other farmers.

WHAT MOVES ME
Experimentation and community building are at my core. Experimentation satisfies my desire to learn. Creating a community space where there is great beer satisfies my desire to contribute positively to Yakima.
