Owner/Cellarmaster at Kana Winery
# years in the beverage biz: 18
ON COLLABORATION IN WINE:
I started home winemaking in the mid 1980’s after setting up my medical practice in Yakima. Our current team of makers here at Kana Winery is led by Tony Lombardo, our part-time winemaker, who was formerly an assistant winemaker at Spring Valley Vintners in Walla Walla. Along with cellar-hand Ken Toney, the three of us have been working together for the past 6 years.
THERE’S MAGIC IN THE MIX:
My favorite yearly ritual in wine is the blending trials for our Rhone-style blends and our red table wine blends. I find it magical, with its taste/smell sensory stimulation, and tasting how our wines come together.
SUN + GRAPES + CULTURE=THE IDEAL WASHINGTON DESTINATION
The Yakima Valley is the cradle for Washington State grape growing and hop growing. It is well established that some of the best grapes in the state comes from the Yakima Valley AVA. Our almost 300 days of sunshine, our cornucopia of fresh fruits and vegetables, and Yakima’s excellent hospitality and cultural events also make this city a great destination.
FAVORITE FOOD & CRAFT BEVERAGE PAIRING RIGHT NOW?

FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN YAKIMA:
My part-time medical practice, playing guitar in my band, and cooking with fresh Yakima Valley ingredients
YAKIMA, FROM FARM TO GLASS:
Since Kana Winery buys fruit directly from wine-grape growers, my farming experience is the necessary “walking the vineyards,” tracking our vines from bud-break to harvest, tasting grapes for ripeness, and decision-making on timing of harvest that then goes directly to our facility for crush. As the saying goes, 90 percent of wine-making is in the vineyard.
